What does Ofsted think?

Head teachers

Internationalism is increasingly being seen as a way to move schools into the future. It makes a great focus for school development with the International School Award as the framework.
  1. It supports the five outcomes of Every Child Matters
  2. It can improve the quality of learning and teaching
  3. It can act as a framework for new learning and teaching strategies such as through shared collaborative projects
  4. It offers strong approaches to Student Voice and Citizenship provision
  5. It enhances curricular provision offering real learning experiences and involvement for all
  6. It supports development in areas such as Global Dimension, Community Cohesion, Diversity Agenda and Skills
  7. It engages parents and the wider community, including faith groups and cultural centres in UK towns and cities
  8. It creates opportunities to involve, share and celebrate with stakeholders, including Ofsted, through the SEF
International School Award on the SEF
The award is mentioned by name in Section One of the 2007-8 SEF, as a 'signficant award that... constitutes a special feature of the school'. You can achieve Foundation Level of the award right now by confirming your intent to offer international experiences to learning and teaching in your school.
International Strategy (DfES 2004)
The Strategy hopes that all schools will work towards the award, and the DfES at the time produced a Head Teachers' Support Document.
Ofsted addresses international dimension
Ofsted produced some great guidance on how to include international work in your SEF. Visit the Ofsted website to
If your priority is standards, languages, community cohesion, sustainable schools, or the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we can help you to deliver strategic support and track its effectiveness.

Case study - Hetton School
Clare Seccombe works as the international coordinator at Hetton School (a language college) in Sunderland. She has prepared a page of tips for school leaders speaking to Ofsted inspectors about the international activities in their school or incorporating it into the SEF, especially with regard to Citizenship.
