Training and Qualifications for Headteachers
In 2001, leadership development activities were transferred to the National College for School Leadership (NCSL).
National Professional Qualification for Headteachers (NPQH)
In 2000, the NSCL reviewed and revised the NPQH. In 2004, they reviewed and revised the National Standards for Headship and the NPQH became mandatory for all first time Headteachers.

Headteacher Induction Programme
The National Standards for Headship also informed the Headteacher Leadership and Management Programme (HEADLAMP) for newly appointed Headteachers, which was reviewed, revised and re-launched by the NCSL in September 2003 as the Headteacher Induction Programme (HIP).

Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers (LPSH)
The National Standards played a smaller part in the development of the Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers (LPSH). Rather than being informed by the National Standards for Headteachers, which focus on what Headteachers should achieve through their leadership, it focused on the characteristics that make Headteachers effective. It was based on research carried out by the Hay Group who had significant expertise in leadership development programmes in business. The key characteristics of effective practice were derived from interviews with effective Headteachers and used to evaluate the practice of Headteachers taking part in the training.

In 2004, the LPSH was the largest senior management development programme in Europe, with over 10,000 Headteachers completing or having completed the programme.
