The Teacher Training Agency’s (TTA) Expanding Remit and Re-designation as the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA)
In March 2004, the Government announced that the TTA’s remit would be widened to build on its success in recruiting and training high quality teachers by:
  • Expanding its role in relation to the wider school workforce, moving further towards securing comprehensive training and development for all school support staff

  • Being a key partner in the new strategic network representing all staff working with children and young people that is being established in response to the emerging Children’s Agenda

  • Strengthening its contribution to teachers’ continuing professional development.
On September 1st 2005, to reflect its wider role in training the whole school team, the TTA was designated the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA).

The new agenda for the TDA for schools builds on the role of the TTA, and many aspects of its work will continue much as before. However, the context for its activities with its current partners will change. This work will now be part of a broader role of ensuring that schools have sufficient staff, suitably trained, across the range of roles in the school workforce and that they have the information, guidance and support they need to realise the full potential of the whole school team. To do this, the TDA will have to develop a new relationship with schools.

The TDA has three overarching goals:
  • To attract able and committed people to teaching concentrating on those subjects where teachers are in short supply.

  • To provide schools and staff with good information on training, development and workforce remodelling. The TTA aims to help schools make the best use of their available human resources, freeing teachers to teach.

  • To create a training and development environment that enables the whole school workforce to develop its effectiveness. Schools need a well-trained, well-equipped workforce that operates as a team. The TDA now works with initial teacher training providers to improve the quality of training so new teachers come into school with the right skills and knowledge. It is also exploring ways to help teachers and school leadership teams maximise the impact of continuing professional development on school improvement. The TDA will now work with its partners on a progressive framework for professional development for support staff.
