Sangam teacher study visits
A professional development opportunity
focusing on curriculum themes with school visits, discussions and
resource gathering.
Next visit
Easter 2011 - (10th April - 20th April) and October half term
2011, dates to be confirmed.
Teachers from all phases of education are
invited to visit South India to:
- Increase their first-hand experience
of a different country and culture
- Take part in a Professional
Development opportunity
- Enrich many curriculum subjects,
particularly Geography, Art and RE
- Strengthen the global dimension
within their schools
What do these visits
offer?
Our main objective is to
enable groups of no more than 10 teachers to learn at first hand
about this very different and rapidly developing country and
culture, explore the local environment, and take part in a choice
of activities to bring back relevant learning and resources to
their school.

What would we do
exactly?
That depends on your
objectives. The visits are carefully structured to suit the
curriculum needs of the members of the group. You may want to
gather material for a geography case study of an Indian village, or
the rapidly changing city of Bangalore for a development unit, or
the environmental issue of water. You may want to discover
the world of Indian music, art, dance, cookery or story.
You may want to visit temples and understand more about
the practice of Hinduism and Indian village rituals. You can
spend time in local schools and do some teaching. You can
visit local markets, temples, the ancient city of Mysore; and most
people want to shop for artefacts and resources for school.
Where in South India?
You will stay at “Sangam”,
a small residential education centre on the edge of the village of
Silvepura, 25 km north of Bangalore. The area is rural but
within easy reach of Bangalore.
Who leads these visits?
The visits are hosted and
led by Imogen and Kiran Sahi, both teachers. Sangam is their
home, and they work with local schools. Kiran also runs an
art and ceramics studio at Sangam.
How much does it cost?
£500 will fully cover all
costs in India, including accommodation, food, study packs and
travel. The airfare is currently £506. You will also
need a visa (£30), vaccinations, and travel insurance.
